of information about conventional and unconventional cancer therapies.

How many of us have close friends or family members who have died of cancer?
What if they had known that cancer didn’t have to be a fatal disease?

"You need to know your enemy if you are to win the fight against him!"

Getting Information is a Hassel! Finding reliable information and then reading about cancer can be very time consuming and a frustrating experience. Cancer information is complicated and is usually explained in such detail that the reader gets lost. Finding information is further complicated by different sources and web-sites giving their spin on cancer. Both conventional and unconventional sides attempt to sanitize their view of cancer and present a viewpoint that they believe in but not necessarily accepting of the other point of view. Both sides are fraught with vested interests and misunderstandings [59 ]. Cancer patients are caught in the middle of this cancer therapy debate.

It is the author’s intent to present information about cancer in a summary and an unbiased manner. The reader can refer to the footnotes at the end of this presentation that support different issues on cancer or to explore the reference in more detail.

Cancer Focus: A number of main points surface from a review of cancer. Instead of focusing on killing cancer or suppressing the symptoms of cancer, cancer specialists need to attack the causes of cancer and ways of safely shrinking tumors. The real issue in the fight against cancer is not choosing therapy sides but healing cancer. Providing quality of life is just as important as extending it. The most overlooked aspect about cancer is ignoring the life style that causes or brings on cancer. The only sure way to prevent cancer from reoccurring is to adopt a permanent lifestyle change. All other information is superfluous to the majority of the public.

What is cancer? New body cells are always being created to replace older ones. Some cancer cells are also formed in this normal process. A healthy immune system of the body seeks out the few cancer cells and destroys them. But when the immune system is overwhelmed or weakened, then more cancer cells are created than destroyed and hence, causing uncontrolled cell growth or cancer. [ 91 ]

If cells keep dividing when new cells are not needed, a mass of tissue forms. Such massive cells increase in number over a long period of time [ many years ], forming a tumor. The growth in size needs to have 10 million or more cancerous cells in order to be detectable. [78] Thus, cancer is more than just a tumor, it reflects a reaction to one’s body over many years. [ 90 ] The tumor should be perceived as a symptom that the immune system is unable to destroy cancer cells. [ 90 ]

This mass of extra tissue, called a growth or tumor, can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are not cancer. They can usually be removed and, in most cases, they do not come back. Most important, the benign cells do not spread to other parts of the body. On the other hand, malignant tumors are cancerous and these can spread to other nearby tissues and organs. Malignant cancerous cells can invade the blood stream and then be spread [ metastasis ] to other parts of the body. Over 100 different cancers have been identified, many by organ or tissue site.

Conditions causing cancer to occur:   The causes of cancer are controversial in nature. Two sides of this controversy are those espousing to validate orthodox cancer research with double-blind-trials versus the presentation of testimonials of patients who successfully survived their unorthodox bouts with cancer.

We need to start with a simple agreed upon premises about cancer cells [90] :

  • 1. are continuously being created in the human body.
  • 2. the immune system is trying to control the cancer cells.
  • 3. cancer mass develops when more cancer cells develop than the immune system can destroy.
  • 4. killing cancer cells is only half the battle, the other half is changing or correcting the life style that causes cancer; otherwise most treated cancers usually reoccur.

The immune system may be disabled when a person, over a long period of time, eats a poor diet, is exposed to toxins, has a genetic predisposition, is exposed to chemicals [ cigarette smoke ] or radiation in the environment, or is exposed to bacteria or viruses; thereby allowing cancer cells to build up. Although these factors attempt to explain the cause of cancer as caused by exposure to undesirable conditions or irritation over a long period of time, they fail to discuss the physical conditions favoring cancer cells to develop. There are a number of plausible physiological conditions that may help cancer cells grow: [13]

1. Oxygen Depleted Level. Healthy and normal body cells need oxygen for normal respiration to make energy to keep cells alive.

Healthy cells have the ability to make oxygen available to cells by injecting oxygen creating hydrogen peroxide into the cell.

When the oxygen level drops below 60 %, the respiration process of making energy changes into fermentation in a cancer cell. [37] Normal cells turn cancerous. Normal body cells need oxygen and are aerobic whereas cancer cells do not need oxygen and are anaerobic. Healthy cells metabolize [ burn ] oxygen and glucose [ blood sugar ] to produce adenosine triphosphate [ATP ] , which is the energy ‘ currency ‘ of cells.

Fermentation occurs in the cytoplasm of cancerous cells, thereby providing energy for cancer cells. This allows cancer cells to survive, but these cells can no longer perform normal cell functions. Cancer cells can only multiply and grow.

Researchers found that when the oxygen level to normal cells is reduced by 35 %, then these usually normal cells begin fermenting energy; thereby becoming cancerous in nature. [26, 41, 55, 88]

In the absence of oxygen the glucose undergoes fermentation to lactic acid.[7]

2. Bad Diet: Experts think that about a quarter of all cancer deaths are caused by unhealthy diets and obesity. Our diet influences our risk of many cancers, including cancers of the bowel, stomach, mouth, foodpipe and breast. [21]

Cancer cells get a quick source of food from sugar and high carbohydrate diet. [32, 63 ]

3. Temperature Cancer cells grow in temperatures below 106 degrees Farehheit. [46]

4. An acid body environment: Cancer cells produce lactic acid as they ferment energy. Cancer cells are acidic whereas healthy tissues are alkaline. Cancer cells thrive in a body environment where the pH value is less than 7.4 or acid environment. [7]

5. Poor blood circulation: Poor circulation results in less oxygen delivery to the cells. But cancer cells create blood vessels so as to insure an adequate food supply.

6. Electrical properties: All body cells possess the electrical ability to communicate between cells. Normal cells possess the ability to communicate information inside themselves and between other cells. Normal cells are well organized in their growth, form strong attachments with their neighbors and stop growing when they repair the area of injury due to contact inhibition with other cells.

However, cancerous cells possess features that are different from normal proliferating cells. Cancer cells are more easily detached and do not exhibit contact inhibition of their growth. Cancer cells become independent of normal tissue signaling and growth control mechanisms. This interferes with our ability to repair cancer cells. In a sense cancer cells have become desynchronized from the rest of the body. [31]

“In the acid medium the DNA loses its positive and negative radical sequence. In addition, the amino acids entering the cell are changed. As a consequence, the RNA is changed and the cell completely loses its control mechanism. Chromosomal aberrations may occur. “ [7]

7. Lack of Sunshine & Vitamin D: Lack of sunshine increases the risk of cancerous growth. [83] Light-colored skin persons are at great disk of developing skin cancer.

8. Genes implicated in cancer development are classified as oncogenes. An oncogene is a modified gene or a set of nucleotides that codes for a protein. It stimulates cell division causing a tumor. Suppressor genes inhibit cell division and cause apoptosis or an orderly process of cancerous death. [29]

9. Microorganisms can cause cancer: Many organisms are known to cause cancer. [14] Back To Top

Treating, Preventing & Controlling cancer: The human body has the ability to heal itself if given the proper conditions and allowing the immune system to work. With this in mind, we need to reverse the conditions that allow cancer to develop. Scientists estimate that as many as one-half of the deaths from cancer in the United States could be prevented. [78]

We need to kill the cancer cells without killing normal healthy cells and we need to restore the immune system. This seems straight forward and simple but the practice of orthodox medicine seems to lack awareness or acceptance of how to do this.

Here are different therapies and healing modalities that are being used:

1. Chemotherapy: used when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Australian medical doctor, researcher and ocology radiologist, Graeme Morgan, reviewed chemotherapy used by conventional medicine to treat cancer patients. His study revealed that majority of such patients did not benefit nor extend their lives with such treatment. It is now clear that chemotherapy only makes a minor contribution [ 2 % ] to cancer survival. [47, 49]

For some kinds of cancer, chemotherapy may be life saving; for others it may be life extending. Chemotherapy and radiation may shrink tumors. [58]

2. Radiation: used to kill tumor cells that have not spread. Most types of radiation do not attack cancer cells specifically. Radiation causes injury to normal cells surrounding the tumor [ side-effect ] while at the same time attempting to kill cancer cells. This side-effect limits the success of radiation therapy [ 10 % or less ].

New radiation therapy at University of Minnesota Medical Clinic cuts down the amount of radiation that medically inoperable patients get from the traditional 35 to three to five treatments. Fewer treatments result in fewer side effects and suffering. [58]

3. Surgery: used to remove tumors that have not spread. [10, 76] In some cases it can be a life-saving, stop- gap measure, particularly where intestinal blockages must be relieved to prevent immediate death from secondary complications. When dealing with internal tumors affecting reproductive or vital organs, the statistical rate of long-term survival on the average is 10 to 15 %. After metastasis, the statistical chances for long-term survival are close to zero. The degree to which surgery is useful is the same degree to which the tumor is not malignant.

The greater the proportion of cancer cells in the tumor, the less likely that surgery will help. The most highly malignant tumors of all generally are considered inoperable. There is no solid evidence that patients who submit to surgery have any greater life expectancy on the average than those who do not. However, success of lung cancer surgery is influenced by vitamin D intake and time of year. [85]

4. Expose cancer cells to a high-oxygen environment: Cancer cells cannot survive in a high level oxygen environment. When any cell is denied 60 % of its oxygen requirements, it evolves into a rouge cell that switches from an oxidative respiration mechanism to a fermentative respiratory mechanism. The cell stops breathing oxygen because there isn’t any, and it starts fermenting the body sugar, glucose, to keep itself alive. The fermenting cell becomes a cancer cell. [43]

The more oxygen, the slower the cancer spreads. The less oxygen, the faster the cancer spreads. [34] An effective and preventive way to support the body’s fight against cancer would be to get as much oxygen to healthy cells as possible. Raising the oxygen levels of normal cells would prevent them from becoming cancerous. If this were to happen, then cancer growth would be arrested. Low tumor oxygen levels [ hypoxia ] and anemia in the patient are associated with increased risk of spread [ metastasis ] and recurrence. [60]

5. Diet is the most important part of restoring the immune system and bringing cancer under control. To reverse cancer, you need to reverse the diet. Cancer diet is just as important as a cancer treatment. [38] Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. Cut down on meat and junk food. Research confirms what health advocates have been suggesting for decades: That raw broccoli has natural chemicals that fight cancer has been advocated for many years. [1, 20, 22]

There are several researchers reviving Linus Pauling’s work in using Vitamin C to kill cancer cells. National Institute’s Mark Levine [81] is exploring Pauling’s intravenous injection technique, while Chen and his The National Academy of Sciences group [82] are using vitamin C to help deliver lethal cancer drugs into the cancer cell.

Supporting these revived attempts to resurrect vitamin C as a therapy for cancer is the review of 90 studies on the relationship between vitamin C and cancer by Gladys Block at the University of California [3]

A major European study [ 33] of 38,452 women over an eight year period found that women eating a lot of sugar may increase their risk of colorectal [colon] cancer.

Diets [64] with high amounts of meat and fat compared to those rich in vegetables and fruit appear to increase the risk of squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. Researchers [23] at Duke University are continuing to study their 2001 study suggesting flaxseed and low fat diet can be protective against prostate cancer. Additional research [12] shows that flaxseed [ and gingseng ] was helpful in lowering the size of tumors after three months of ingesting three tablespoons per day.

6. Temperature: Medical scientists have been aware for some time that a fever is the body’s natural defense against infections and diseases. A body temperature over 103 degrees Fahrenheit kills bacteria. This idea has been used in fighting cancer. Non conventional therapists have been advocating high body temperatures to fight cancer. Several recent medical scientists are now also beginning to support this idea. One such advocate, Coffey, [72] reflects on the success cyclist Armstrong has had in having complete remission from prostate cancer. Armstrong inadvertently raised the temperature of his body for long periods of time while cycling, thereby inadvertently killing the cancer cells in his body.

Clinical studies done at Duke University Medical Center and [73] on hyperthermia therapy are varied but have shown complete tumor disappearance ranging from 24% to 83 % when radiation and hyperthermia are used together. National Cancer Institute [71] has very good information about use of hyperthermia to treat cancer; thereby recognizing that this may be an effective way to kill cancer cells.

Stanford University researchers, Dai, Honqjie, et la., [50] are experimenting with cooking cancer by using nano-tubes, although the application of this medical technology is still in the near future. Nano-medicine such as this research gives validity for this approach and high hopes to cancer patients.

In Japan, the daily use of the hot full bath may destroy incipient cancers.

7. High pH therapy: Tests carried out by N. Nieper [7] in Hannover, Germany and by H. Sartori [67] in Washington, DC, [ 50 patients in 1981-1982 ] using the therapy as prescribed in Brewer’s article [7] on men with cancer resulted in rapid shrinkage of tumor masses. At a cellular pH slightly above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant and at pH 8.5 cancer cells will die while healthy cells will live.

8. Improve blood circulation: The fast growth of cancer cells and rapid expansion of the tumor mass usually outpace new vascular generation, resulting in an insufficient blood supply to certain areas of the tumor tissues. [ referred to as the Warburg Effect [87] ]

When blood circulation increases, oxygenation improves and the body has a chance of healing itself. Exercise can improve blood circulation. Deep breathing improves blood-oxygen circulation. Treatment: Cell death or necrosis may be a brought about by cutting off the blood supply to cancerous cells. Another approach is to limit blood supply to cancer cells. A new drug, [ angiogenesis blocker ] is being tested at the Hospital for Tumour Biology in Freiburg, Germany [74] , that would prevent the formation of blood vessels in tumors.

9. Change Electrical field: Changing the electrical field of the body [25] may have an affect on normal and cancer cells. Research in this area is very weak at this time.

11. Sunlight & Vitamin D: A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that the widespread deficiency of vitamin D among Americans is more harmful than once believed, increasing their risk of fractures, muscle weakness, and even cancer as they age. A forthcoming Harvard School of Public Health study is expected to show that adequate vitamin D levels reduce cancer risk by 30 percent, increasing pressure on the US Department of Agriculture to raise the recommended daily consumption of the nutrient.

Many persons living in the north near the Canadian-USA border, and especially Canadians, may not be getting enough daily exposure to sunshine to synthesize Vitamin D; thereby increasing their risk to cancer [84] New research [66] strengthens the case that vitamin D may be a powerful cancer preventative. Researchers gave 1000 IU of the same form of vitamin D that the skin makes from sunshine, D3 or cholecalciferol, to a small number of women and observed that vitamin D cut several types of cancer by 60 percent. Vitamin D helps to regulate cell growth, a fundamental biological process that goes haywire in cancer. Indeed, success of lung cancer surgery is influenced by vitamin D intake and time of year. [85]

12. Gene therapy: Research [27] is being fostered to activate tumor suppressor gene p53 to stop cell growth.

13. Vaccines: Researchers are making progress on preventing cancdr with vaccines. Gardasil helps protect against HPV, a sexually transmitted virus known to cause cervical cancer in women. The other vaccine is against hepatitis B and protects against liver cancer. Each vaccine consists of three injections given over a period of six months. [ 92 ]

14. Other Approaches: There is an explosion of open minded-research taking place that would be unthinkable and unacceptable to the medical establishment just 10 years ago. For example, besides, using vitamin C to kill cancer cells, researchers in 2004 at Mayo Clinic [68] have found phytochemicals in green tea that kill cancer cells and University of Minnesota scientists [69] announced in 2005 the use of stem cells to kill cancer cells. Complementary and alternative medicine is no longer in the shadows. What was once considered unacceptable, or “ far out” therapy without scientific proof is getting another look. There is more of an open mind among conventional doctors and researchers [80] to explore alternative approaches to treating cancer.

The most important technology revolution of this century is going to take place in health care and medicine. It is just beginning to propel the greatest technological era of this century. Examples:

DCA or Dichloroacetate: was discovered at University of Alberta [19] to normalize the mitochondria or energy engine of body cells, thereby killing cancer cells. Researchers are having difficulty raising money for further DCA research, as DCA cannot be copyrighted as a drug.

Essiac tea: Rediscovery of a Canadian Ojibway native people essiac herb tea to cleanse the body. Canadian nurse Caisse [8] found it helpful in healing cancer patients.

Nano-medicine: Nanotechnology has great promise in fighting cancer a well as other human ailments. A number of different approaches [51, 52] are being developed to destroy cancer cells but not healthy cells.

Ultra-sound histotripsy therapy [79] aims high frequency sound waves at cancerous tissue, destroying it safely with no collateral tissue damage.

Stem cells: University of Minnesota scientists [69] , in an exploratory approach, used human embryonic stem cells to kill cancer cells.

The majority of anticipated new therapies and treatments for cancer hoover around drug companies being able to market medications. Researchers and drug corporations are scrambling to copyright their medical findings, thereby delaying the availability of many promising medical therapies.

Conclusion:

Cancer is shrouded in controversy, in suspicion, in fraud, in fear, in distrust. The medical establishment has not had much success in treating cancer. Their success rate is measured in the number of survivors over a five year period. Not only is the success rate about 2 percent for chemotherapy, about 10 % or less for radiation therapy and unreliable success rate for surgery, but these statistics are often rigged to make the treatment appear more acceptable. Making all this worse is the fact that most cancer patients die from the traditional treatment modalities and not from the cancer itself. The majority of cancer patients are not saved by chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Their lives are not appreciably extended and their quality of life is diminished.

Traditional medical cancer therapy is not the “only act in town!”

Who can you trust? Do you trust the medical establishment that appears to have become a lackey to the drug companies where healing for profit has also taken control of the health departments of national governments? Can you really trust your practitioner to heal you?

The more you know about cancer, the more confused you can become. So what do you do if you have cancer? Answer: You go to school and do your homework!

The stage of cancer may be most important to the medical doctor and cancer specialist but not so to the person with cancer. The cancer patient wants to live, wants to be cancer free and wants to have hope for the future!

There are four inexpensive things that can be done immediately:

1. become informed about all aspects of cancer immediately. Read. The internet is your free library. Have an open mind to both sides of the cancer controversy. Cancer patients can become depressed and discouraged very quickly in their struggle to overcome cancer. Cancer is not a do it alone project, so get an advocate to garner the information, make contacts and take the stress off you.

2. Change your diet: There is strong evidence that most cancers are instigated by a poor diet and life style. Stop smoking. Stop exposure to toxic and irritating chemicals and radiation. And stop eating foods that may contribute to cancer. Change from eating animal meats, junk foods and sugar to fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

3. Begin reviving your immune system: For example, eat a cottage cheese and flax seed [ oil ] diet. It will do you no harm, it is inexpensive, and it may work for you. Get the best advice about supplements and start taking them now. There may be no single best approach. Since people differ in body metabolism you need to attack cancer from several approaches.

4. Prevention: Stop doing things that increase your chances of getting cancer. For example, stop smoking, avoid inhaling second hand smoke, keep away from exposure to chemicals, and so on.

Follow the dictums:

Take charge of your own health and body
Give your body a chance to heal itself
Do no harm
Trust yourself more than all others
Prevent getting cancer?

  • Release proteins within cytoplasm that stimulate signals to cause run-away cell division.
  • Have great adhesion to other cancer cells
  • Cancer cells develop a protein 13 times thicker than normal cells. This makes it difficult for the immune system to attack them.
